"I'll just double-check it"

I heard it again,three or four times today and even saw it in the local newspaper. It always makes me want to make a comment like "when did you check it before?" or "are you going to check it twice now?". It has become just something said without thinking, similar to "have a good day". No doubt there are lots of other such things we say, meaningless bits of speech but a sort of glue that binds as conversationally together. Long live free speech!
